Since November 2025, seven outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) have been recorded in the city of Tshwane, affecting both commercial and small-scale pig farms. According to Gauteng Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture and Rural Development, 69,171 pigs have been affected, with around 60,000 culled. The South African Pork Producers' Organisation (SAPPO) has already spent more than R10 million on culling, carcass disposal and labour, while the full financial losses suffered by farmers have yet to be assessed.
The outbreak has dealt a significant blow to Gauteng's pig industry, which is already facing the effects of Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). In response to questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, the MEC said the department is working with the national government, SAPPO and private veterinarians by providing advisory and supervisory support. However, concerns have been raised that stronger provincial leadership and a more comprehensive outbreak response are needed to prevent further spread and protect farmers' livelihoods.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to publish a detailed ASF response plan, including outbreak maps, regular public updates, data on affected farms, and a full assessment of economic losses. The party argues that improved disease surveillance, transparent reporting, stronger veterinary support and early intervention are essential to safeguard food security, protect the livestock sector and restore confidence in the province's animal health preparedness.
